Maurice Hill Transport is a family-owned business and has been running for ca 70 years now. If I was to describe Maurice Hill as anything, I think I’d describe it as a family. There’s best part of 300 families that have a living, have a home, put food on the table because of the job we do here. And to us, that means more. And it really does.

Yeah. We’re all, we’re all in this together. And safety is the priority.

So the Exeros video telematics system is a means for us to develop that priority further. And not just protecting ourselves, but also our customers and the general public as well. So it allows us to expand our health and safety culture outside of what might be the normal business.

But what I think is important is it protects the driver. So they saw it as a huge positive because it supports them, you know, the monitor, they can see the blind spot, the cameras, et cetera. The audible warning for turning left. This equipment was very much something that they felt was supporting them as a driver.

The Challenge: Driver Safety and TfL Compliance

We first introduced it due to requirements for London, and a lot of our drivers go into London. You know, the monitor, they can see the blind spot, the cameras, et cetera, the audible warning for turning left.

This is being taken from ex-drivers that are now office-bound, trying to help the drivers that are out on the road because they have got a challenge out there. Every day, they’ve got a challenge. This gives them the ability to know what the drivers are up against every single day.

We chose Exeros because it was going to be a challenge to get 85 vehicles plus fitted with the equipment suitable for TFL. And we wanted to be confident about all those involved. And that’s why we selected Exeros.

We found the reliability to be exceptional.

The drivers themselves are the oil in the machine. Without them, we've got nothing.

The Integration

So we rolled this out by involving everybody in the process. Exeros, obviously, they took the lead on this, and we put it to the directors, we put it to the drivers, we included everybody in the process. From that, we were able to introduce something which everybody bought into and took ownership of it.

And the (TfL) standard was changed or altered right at the 11th hour. My fleet manager said to me, “Are you sure that Exeros has got this right?”

And I said yes. We ended up with complete compliance.

The results

We found, first of all, the reliability to be exceptional. When our vehicles go on to sites with the Exeros equipment, they’re often audited. They’re often challenged. And I have not known a single occasion whereby this equipment has failed. Not one single occasion.

Yeah, so we’ve been able to challenge third parties due to being able to visually see what took place during the RTA, and that’s meant a lot of our road traffic accidents; we’ve proved that it’s not down to us and it’s been down to somebody else because we’ve seen it on the cameras.

It also reassures the driver, the customer, that what they’re looking at is clear and understandable and proves whatever points that we need to prove to our customers or to our drivers.  

So, yeah, my transport managers inform me that VideMatics is extremely easy to use. They’re very happy with the clarity. And they’re very happy with the performance of the tracker and all aspects of Exeros.

They’re very impressed.
