Meet Story Contracting

Story is a multi-award-winning civil engineering and construction company. With offices across England and Scotland, they provide highly respected rail, plant and construction solutions. Naturally, they take safety seriously. They’ve a strong reputation for maintaining outstanding health & safety practices across the country. Their motto is to ‘Do It Right’ – and that applies to their people, partners, and customers. After eight consecutive years of claiming the prestigious RoSPA ‘Gold’ Award for health and safety, Story wanted to take their fleet safety to the next level. On-site and at their yards and depos, safety was contained. They could see what was going on, they knew the risks, and they’d implemented measures accordingly. But what about those bits in between yards, depots, offices, and sites?

We worked closely with Carl, Story’s Fleet Manager, to determine how to take things to the next level. We agreed on a phased approach, starting with video telematics (VideMatics) connected to high-quality dash cameras for the Scotland department – and then scaling based on results. Three months after we finished installing our solutions, the Scotland department was showing improvements across the board. Not only did they defeat false claims in record time and lower repair and maintenance costs, but they also increased vehicle uptime, keeping the Story machine running smoothly. What followed was a full rollout across their UK divisions and close discussions on how we could help them grow further. Story Contracting is now seeing improved safety and savings every month thanks to our video telematics.

False claim: How Story claimed instead of paid

While travelling along a bend in the road, a motorcyclist lost control on the wet surface, slid across the carriageway and struck a Story van approaching from the opposite direction. Although the rider was not seriously injured, they later alleged the van driver was responsible and submitted a claim for compensation.

Rather than entering a prolonged dispute, the Story team reviewed the incident footage using Exeros’ VideMatics platform. The video captured the event from start to finish, clearly showing the motorcyclist losing traction on the wet road. The Story driver had no role in causing the collision. With clear evidence available immediately, the claim was challenged and resolved quickly. Instead of paying out, Story successfully recovered costs from the motorcyclist. The matter was settled without lengthy investigation, paperwork, or ongoing uncertainty. And Story actually claimed back repair costs from the motorcyclist’s insurer instead of paying for a settlement.
