DVS 2024 - EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
The Direct Vision Standard (DVS) is one of the most significant compliance requirements affecting HGV operators in the UK. This guide covers everything operators need to know about the current DVS requirements, including the 2024 updates.
What Is DVS?
The DVS is a framework introduced by Transport for London to rate HGV cabs on how much a driver can directly see from their seat, without relying on mirrors or cameras. Ratings range from zero to five stars. Vehicles with higher ratings pose less risk to vulnerable road users because the driver can see more of their surroundings directly.
Who Does DVS Apply To?
DVS applies to HGVs over 12 tonnes operating in Greater London. Operators from outside London who make deliveries to London addresses are also affected if their vehicles exceed the 12-tonne threshold.
What Are the Current Requirements?
All affected HGVs must have a minimum DVS star rating of one, or must be operating under a Progressive Safe System permit. The PSS requires approved camera and proximity warning systems, driver training and assessment, and registration with TfL.
The 2024 update tightened the PSS requirements, extending the equipment specifications and updating the driver training requirements. Operators who achieved compliance under earlier frameworks should verify that their current configuration meets the 2024 standard.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Non-compliant HGVs in Greater London face a Penalty Charge Notice of £550 per incident. TfL enforcement has increased significantly, and the risk of non-compliance is real and quantifiable.
Next Steps
The fastest route to compliance clarity is a fleet assessment that confirms your current compliance status and identifies any gaps. Exeros provides this assessment as a starting point for operators who want to understand their DVS position.
